Macayo

This district, located about 2km outside the village on the way to Epina, is home to a dense palm grove and a landscape and ethnographic setting associated with agricultural activities (mainly potatoes and vines). Many houses have kept the traditional rural style, made of stone and mud with gabled roofs. The corners of the traditional houses are particularly interesting as they often have protruding and irregularly shaped stone heads that catch the eye. Macayo is well known for the richness of its midlands, especially the plots in the ravine, next to one of the most impressive palm groves in the Vallehermoso basin, from which families could make palm honey, providing them with an extra source of income. Macayo’s honey was highly valued according to the old people of the village.

Los Loros - El Carmen

Located in the highest part of the Barranco del Ingenio ravine, we find a neighbourhood at the foot of the mountain where there must have been lush forests of Canarian Laurel, which was ploughed during the first centuries after the conquest to use the wood for the sugar plantations. The forest gave way to a special environment that still preserves a unique set of terraces and palm trees, with some 35 buildings that have not been so well preserved or have been taken over by new plants that have almost completely eliminated their former colonial beauty.

Mazapeces

This hamlet, in the northwest of Vallehermoso, is made up of a traditional dwelling at the bottom of the ravine that climbs up the hillside towards the area of “El Cabezo”. The whole area is covered in dense palm groves with more than 3,000 specimens, which together with the abundant traditional architecture and the terraced fields create a spectacularly beautiful landscape. Mazapeces was very popular for growing cereals and legumes such as lentils, peas, chickpeas, wheat, barley or millet in the terraced fields. At present, there are plots of potatoes, vines, millet and a variety of vegetables for personal use.
