Climbing Mount Teide

Located in the centre of the island of Tenerife, Teide National Park can be visited using one of the many paths, including that which takes you to the summit of the volcano. Starting at Montaña Blanca, this highly difficult trek due to a progressive change in altitude, (from 1,367 to 3,715 metres) takes about six hours to reach the Altavista shelter. You can stay the night if you get a permit and await the morning to face the final stretch of the ascent which to the very crater of the Teide.

Ruta de los Volcanes (Volcano Route)

Located between the central and southern regions of the island of La Palma, the Ruta of the Volcanoes has great natural trekking and because of this it was originally an important communication route between the island’s regions. This pathway, conditioned and signposted, goes through the municipalities of El Paso, Mazo and Fuencaliente within Cumbre Vieja National Park. Given the little vegetation and demanding inclines, it is highly advisable to wear suitable clothing, good mountain footwear and head protection. It is also important to take enough food and plenty of water for a six-eight hours hike.

Our Lady’s Way

Our Lady’s way (Camino de la Virgen) goes all along the summits of central El Hierro and allows trekkers to contemplate wonderful views of the pastures, the slopes of El Julan, El Golfo, El Pinar, Nisdafe and the region of Azofa, quite near Valverde. On the flat, it goes through the different types of forests of El Hierro (juniper, pine and laurel) before entering the pasture lands of Nisdafe. It will take a day to complete the trek, so it can be done in stages.

Rambla de Castro

Located in Los Realejos, in the north of Tenerife, Rambla de Castro combines great natural richness of a protected space with evidence of farm work in the fields of the Canary Islands. This trek starts at sea level at the beach of Los Roques and ends in the Hacienda de Castro, where the visitor can recall the pirate attacks of past centuries, see for oneself the splendor of the Casona de Castro (Manor house) and in La Godejuela, look at the place where the first steam engine used to pump water was set up in Tenerife.

Monte del Agua

Located between the municipalities of El Tanque, Los Silos and Buenavista del Norte, in the north of Tenerife, this easy walk is nearly all on forest tracks and joins the rural areas of Erjos and Las Portelas. The path crosses Monte del Agua and Pasos, a big wood of verdant plants with laurel forest and Myrica faya. On the way trekkers will see two species of native Canarian pigeons, laurel pigeon and collared dove. Also of note are interesting examples of traditional architecture with tiled roofs and stone walls.

Las Vegas

Located in the south of Tenerife, this rural route goes through the hamlet of Las Vegas and lets us see the unique characteristics of the traditional Canarian architecture. The route also takes in water springs and infiltration galleries with take the water to the higher areas of the island. This natural scene includes areas of Canarian pine, species of island undergrowth like rockrose and “retama del Teide” as well as native plant species like Canary Island Giant Burgloss, Klenia Nerifolia and Canary Island Spurge.

Cruz del Carmen-Punta del Hidalgo

The path which links Cruz del Carmen with Punta del Hidalgo includes three very different stretches owing to the plant life in the Anaga Rural Park, in the north of Tenerife. In the first part of the trek, between Cruz del Carboneras, laurel forest is abundant, we then move onto small agricultural allotments until we get to the area of Chinamada. The final stretch of the walk descends to sea level with lots of brushwood in Punta del Hidalgo.

Caldera Blanca

Located in the centre of the island of Lanzarote, the Caldera Blanca route crosses ample volcanic badlands on a lava surface which resulted from the eruptions between 1730 and 1736. Its two central elements, Caldereta and Caldera Blanca, originate from two cones which were caused by previous volcanic eruptions. Caldera Blanca is one of the highest peaks in this volcanic range in the centre of the island.

Camino de Los Gracioseros

This trekking route goes along the path that inhabitants of La Graciosa took to go back and forth to Lanzarote. This four kilometre route of average to high difficulty, depending on whether it is uphill or downhill, goes along the cliffs of Famara, in the north, with the island of La Graciosa across the Río. The trek along volcanic rocks is somewhat slippery at times and ends at sea level. As a reward after the hike, a swim in the blue waters of the Río is a must.

Los Ajaches

Located in the south western region of Lanzarote, Los Ajaches is a big volcanic formation which takes up the southern part of the island with a mountain range in an area of leeward winds and stony windward flat areas. The municipality of Yaiza is home to an important archaeological heritage with caves, etchings and remains of former farming. This area, the oldest on the island, still undergoes major wearing away due to erosion which in the last ten million years has carved out the ravines which go through this natural route in Lanzarote.
