Museo del Vino El Grifo

This winery is the fifth oldest in Spain. Its press dates back to 1775. Tours can be arranged with tastings and discussions on the history and innovations associated with wine. Visits can also include discovering the small cactus garden, the fruit orchard, and the Palm Tree. Those interested in wine will be fascinated with the muscatel “chabocos”, which are holes in the lava which 19th century vines grew out from.

Cementerio Marino de Cofete

It’s unusual for a cemetery to be surrounded by the ocean. This resting place for the dead has been integrated seamlessly into the sand and stones of the local area. In the doorway there are some memorial objects and a plaque counting the deceased. The beauty of the area makes it easy to see why the native inhabitants of Fuerteventura chose the beach as a cemetery. During the 19th century, the first inhabitants lifted corpses on to the backs of camels and transported them in a funeral procession for about 40km to arrive at the beach cemetery.

Arenas Blancas

There was little reason to give it another name, as what truly defines this 50-metre-long cove in the Frontera Rural Park (Lomo Negro) is that it is the only one formed from mollusc shells, carried in by marine currents and gradually eroded as waves repeatedly break against the volcanic rocks along the coast. Despite its open-bay shape and some wave action, it is not dangerous and is usually a calm beach, ideal for swimming, especially for those who value a sense of privacy.
