Stargazing from San Borondón

A Starlight Reserve

The San Borondón vantage point, in the west of La Palma on the coast of Tazacorte takes full advantage of a natural terrace over the Atlantic Ocean. From there, with the help of two information panels, you can observe the extraordinary skies of La Palma, the first island in the world to be named a Starlight Reserve for its light pollution control. Easy to get to on foot but with no parking facilities, there are also public services nearby in Tazacorte port.

Admire the constellations from this astronomic viewpoint

From mid-Autumn at the San Borondón viewpoint it’s possible to see the North Star and the Cassiopeia constellation with its M shape and the Cepheus constellation created by a group of less sparkling stars. On dark nights when there is no moon you can also see the luminous band of the Milky Way from Cassiopeia to the Cygnus in the Northern Cross.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
- If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
- Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
