Night sky watching without light interference from the highest peak of Lanzarote

Situated in the north of Haría, the Peñas del Chache lookout is the main reference point when it comes to night sky watching on the island of Lanzarote. At a height of 670metres, the highest peak on the island and well away from light interference, Peñas del Chache can be reached easily by car. A parking area is provided.

The spectacular sight of the star fields in the Milky Way

On a moonless summer’s night, looking towards the south you will see the most amazing sight of the Milky Way from the viewing point at Peñas del Chache,. Two constellations stand out in the northern hemisphere in the summer season: Sagitarius and Scorpius. Shining especially brightly is Antares, Scorpius’s ruby red star. Anyone can recognize these two constellations, Sagitarius looks like a teapot and Scorpius, like the long tailed insect of the same name. In order to see the great sight of the star fields in the Milky Way, remember to take your binoculars.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
- If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
- Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
