Situated in the north east of El Hierro, the town of Valverde is the social, administrative and religious centre of the island and was founded at the end of the 15th Century, during the initial stages of the conquest of the Canaries. Before gaining political independence in the 19th Century, it belonged to the Counts of La Gomera.
