Miguel de Unamuno’s house is in the old part of Puerto de Cabras. This is the place where the writer was welcomed after being exiled by Primo de Rivera in 1924. Miguel de Unamuno travelled around Fuerteventura for almost half a year. He was inspired by and reflected on the beauty of the local area in articles and sonnets. His old house has become a museum where visitors can admire a typical bourgeois family home in Fuerteventura with luxury items such as a phonograph and typewriter.

The historic town of Betancuria was the old administrative capital of Fuerteventura. Since 1979 it has been recognized as an Historic Complex and an Asset of Cultural Interest. Set among picturesque streets, this museum is designed to let visitors discover the history of the island’s native inhabitants, the Mahos. Archaeological remains which date back to the 15th century have been found in La Pared, Cueva de Villaverde, Montaña de Tindaya, La Atalayita and La Fortaleza. The local heritage is compiled in different temporary exhibitions. Recent shows have, for example, surveyed the excavations carried out in the convent area of the local town.

The Banana Museum opened in 2004 in Tazacorte, a very sunny town, known as being the place in the Canary Islands with the most daylight hours. The museum’s design is unusual. It consists of a Canarian house with two floors: on the top floor there are information panels, photographs and work tools that explain the history of bananas and their impact on society as well as information related to the cultivation and export of the fruit. On the ground floor there is an assembly hall for exhibitions or conferences and a shop. In the shop you can buy bananas, liqueurs and other decorative and edible items with a banana theme.

In the museum Trapiche El Melonar you can learn about the history of sugar cane and the history of families that grew up in the trade in La Palma. To this day traditional recipes are followed. This means distilling the juice of the freshly pressed cane in the copper still over the fire.

This mansion illustrates the power of Puntallana in the 17th century. As well as a family home, in its day the building has been used as a town hall, court and school. The original inhabitants fell in love with the richness of the natural environment, and the population of the local area grew with the arrival of immigrants who worked with the maritime traffic. History is preserved in the manor house to the smallest details of daily life. It looks like a family was living there and had just left home.

Founded in 1978, and located within the parent parish of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios, in the municipality of Llanos de Aridane, this museum has a collection of ecclesiastical art that will delight visitors. There is a sculpture of Saint Joseph and the Child, a mantle of the Virgin of the Rosary, silver treasures such as crowns of saints and virgins, a valuable reliquary from the Vatican, a chalice and monstrance, polychrome carvings from the Sevillian school and notable silk textiles of priests.

This visitor center is much more than an information point about the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park. It brings together a selection of specialized exhibitions. From the outside it has a contemporary design, which contrasts with the green and earthy volcanic colours of the Pilar recreational area and the Cumbre Vieja volcano. Inside you can learn about geology and volcanism through audiovisual projections and exhibitions which outline the various eruptions in the history of La Palma.

With three naves, a stone façade and the largest bell in the Canary Islands, the church of Valverde is known as a religious centre. Until the end of the last century it was where the church administration had its headquarters. The location collects together a number of significant artefacts from El Hierro’s history. The site is an example of 18th century baroque architecture. There is an altarpiece with the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception and a number of sacred works of art. The clock on show is French. It was donated in 1867 by Dr. Gaspar Jerónimo Quintero and each year on December 31 it announces the start of a new year to celebratory crowds.

Arriving by car along the La Frontera road, you can easily recognize the church of La Candelaria by its enormous walls of lime and carved stones. On each side there is an access door in the shape of a semicircular arch. Please note that climbing the stairs to the bell tower is recommended. The location has a car park right in front and an easy-to-access restaurant. For those that want to explore, there is wider variety of eateries in the town itself.

Unique and spectacular. These are the two best adjectives to describe this little settlement. This gem is hidden in the municipality of Tijarafe. It is made up of a group of white houses built into a 50-metre tall cave by its inhabitants over 100 years ago.
