Museo Atlántico

In the south of Lanzarote, opposite the bay of Las Coloradas, we find one of the world’s very few underwater museums: the Museo Atlántico. The museum’s over three hundred sculptures in realist style, created by the British artist Jason deCaires, create a dreamlike atmosphere that can only be discovered by diving under the water. Located beside the Marina Rubicón at a depth of just 12 metres, the impressive Museo Atlántico is within reach of divers of all levels.

Casa de la Aduana o Pozo de la Aguada

This historic site, known as the Customs House or Pozo de la Aguada, is closely linked to the origins of San Sebastián de La Gomera and its relationship with the sea. It was once one of the main freshwater supply points for ships and local inhabitants, at a time when the island was a regular stop on Atlantic routes. Today, it offers insight into the strategic importance of water and the port in the development of the island’s capital, bringing together heritage, history and landscape in a single setting.

The hermitage dedicated to the Virgin of Charity protects the royal road of Jinama. The small oratory dates from 1924 and was built with contributions from the inhabitants of San Andrés and Isora, as well as emigrants to Cuba. Centro Etnográfico Casa de Las Quinteras

If you want to discover life in the workshops of professionals operating in the blacksmith, textile, wood and clay industries that existed in El Hierro’s past, there is nothing like visiting the old home of the Las Quinteras family. The restored site is located in Villa de Valverde. There are four rooms. In these spaces there are historical samples on show. The ethnographic samples—including pre-hispanic remains—have been collected by the island council. Handcrafted pieces are sold in the shop to promote the development of native crafts. The works on display show that contemporary artists from El Hierro continue the island’s philosophy of self-sufficiency and sustainability.

Epina

This hamlet was traditionally known for growing fruits and vegetables. It is made up of dozens of houses, many of which are made of stone and mud with Arabic tiles and gable roofs, more than 200 years old and well preserved. Although the hamlet is practically uninhabited, some 40 years ago there were more than 100 people living here. A few metres above the hamlet we find the famous Chorros de Epina, legendary water springs that are a very important part of the island’s culture. In this area we also find the Hermitage of San Isidro, the feast day of which is celebrated on 15 May.

Ruiz de Padrón House

The architecture seems to be typical of the late eighteenth century: the elongated main façade, the door in the center of the first floor with windows on both sides and an upper floor with a set of windows corresponding to the openings in the ground floor. In addition, large openings for the profusion of light and air, a spacious and rectangular inner courtyard and upon it a balcony through which you can access the upper rooms. The importance of this house lies, above all, in the fact that it was the birthplace of Ruiz de Padrón, priest and deputy, who achieved the temporary abolition of the Holy Inquisition with his speech. Located at Calle Real No. 57.
