Las Tederas Viewpoint

This lookout point of Las Tederas, very close to the Aula de la Naturaleza of the same name, owes its name to the tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa), a plant of Mediterranean origin to which important medicinal properties are attributed. In traditional Canarian medicine it has been mainly used in the form of a poultice to heal wounds. From this position, the highest of Santa Lucía's lookout point, you can appreciate a wide perspective of La Caldera de Tirajana, the monumental geological phenomenon located in the center of Gran Canaria with a southeast orientation.

Centro Etnográfico Casa de Las Quinteras

If you want to discover life in the workshops of professionals operating in the blacksmith, textile, wood and clay industries that existed in El Hierro’s past, there is nothing like visiting the old home of the Las Quinteras family. The restored site is located in Villa de Valverde. There are four rooms. In these spaces there are historical samples on show. The ethnographic samples—including pre-hispanic remains—have been collected by the island council. Handcrafted pieces are sold in the shop to promote the development of native crafts. The works on display show that contemporary artists from El Hierro continue the island’s philosophy of self-sufficiency and sustainability.

Ruta de la Fortaleza

The route leads from the centre of Santa Lucía, through the Llano de la Piedra, to the cemetery, where it descends into the Sorrueda neighbourhood with views over the Sorrueda dam. It then crosses the dam and arrives in Fortaleza Grande by road. This place saw the end of the islanders’ long resistance to the Castilian armies at the end of the 15th century. After climbing the rock formation, you cross a cave to reach the other side of the mountain. Next, you go round another peak known as Fortaleza Chica, then following a path parallel to the main road, you return to the Llanos de la Piedra and the old town. This route is particularly significant because of the archaeological importance of the area, as well as the rich native flora and the impressive views over the whole of the Caldera de Tirajana and the ravine bed.
