On the occasion of the official visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria, special mobility and security measures will be in place at various points across the island on Thursday, 11 June.
Most tourist services, accommodation, restaurants, shops and activities will continue to operate as normal. However, temporary traffic restrictions and increased numbers of people are expected in certain areas.
⚠️ If you plan to travel between the south of Gran Canaria, the airport and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we recommend allowing more time than usual for your journeys.
Areas where the greatest disruption is expected
Arguineguín and the south of Gran Canaria
An official event will be held at the Port of Arguineguín during the morning.
The main disruptions will be concentrated in:
- Port of Arguineguín.
- Access routes to Arguineguín.
- GC-500.
- Sections of the GC-1 between the airport and the south of the island.
Temporary road closures and traffic restrictions are expected during the official journeys between Gando Air Base, Arguineguín and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
From midday and during the afternoon, several events will take place in the city.
The areas with the greatest restrictions will be:
- Vegueta and the area around the Cathedral of Santa Ana.
- Plaza de Santa Ana.
- The area around the Bishop’s Palace.
- Siete Palmas.
- Gran Canaria Stadium.
- Gran Canaria Arena.
A high number of people is expected throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Journeys to the airport
If you are due to take a flight on 11 June, we recommend setting off earlier than usual, especially if you are travelling from:
- Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
- Arguineguín.
- Maspalomas.
- Playa del Inglés.
- Meloneras.
- Puerto Rico.
- Mogán.
The main disruptions on the GC-1 are expected during the morning, coinciding with the official journeys between the airport, the south of the island and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Recommendations for getting around the island
- Plan your journeys in advance.
- Check traffic conditions before setting off.
- Consider possible alternative routes.
- Allow for longer journey times than usual.
- Confirm the times and meeting points for any excursions and booked activities.
- Wherever possible, avoid non-essential journeys through affected areas during the busiest times.

Morning
Between approximately 10:30 and 13:30.
Coinciding with journeys between:
- Gran Canaria Airport.
- Arguineguín.
- Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Afternoon/evening
Between approximately 17:30 and 21:00.
Mainly in:
- Siete Palmas.
- Gran Canaria Stadium.
- Gran Canaria Arena.
- Access routes to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
