Roque de los Muchachos Viewpoint

Viewpoint at the summit of La Palma

The Roque de los Muchachos viewpoint is situated at the very top of La Palma, one of the best places in the world for astronomy. Laid out below is a breath-taking view of a giant volcanic crater 1,500 metres deep, covered in trees and with volcanic rocks in amazing formations. This area, declared a National Park, is an absolute must for anyone staying in La Palma. For those who suffer from vertigo it is best to prepare yourself beforehand for the magnitude of the visual spectacle.

Walking along the edge of the Taburiente crater

To better understand how this huge rift formed on the island of La Palma, you can visit the information desk in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, next to the car park. If you wear appropriate footwear and take water and sun protection with you, you can walk part of the GR-131 trail, which runs around the edge of the crater (caldera). On cloudless days don't forget to take a photo of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro hovering over the sea.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
  • Respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths and spaces causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
