Surfing the left hand wave of La Santa

Ideal conditions for surfing all year round in Lanzarote

On the northwest coast of the island of Lanzarote, in the fishing village of La Santa, is a spot which can be surfed all year round. Not a wave for beginners, the left of La Santa is one of the most sought after waves both by local surfers and visitors because of its consistency and quality. Situated in an area of steep volcanic coast and strong waves, it is easily accessible from the village itself. Vehicles can be left in a car park across from the spot.

A tube wave for experienced surfers in La Santa

The left of La Santa is of undeniable quality, a short explosive wave which breaks on both sides. Surfers prefer the left hand wave, which is somewhat longer than the right hand, with perfect clean barrels which break over a volcanic reef. Entry into the water is difficult as you have to walk down the rocks and enter in front of the peak, take great care and wear surf booties as the sea is strong and its bottom is steep. Although conditions are consistent, surfing is optimum between the months of September and May with S-SW-SE-E winds and N-NE-NW-W swells and at medium tide.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
