Sabinosa

Tradition and excellent wines

Sitting on a volcanic hillside in the west of the island is Sabinosa, the most isolated village on El Hierro which has best preserved the island’s customs; in fact, it is famous for its great folkloric tradition. From here you can get exceptional views of the Gulf Valley and its narrow streets which give an example of the local architecture. Lovers of good wine should not leave without tasting its excellent wines, one of the best kept secrets of this unique village, which still has traditional wine presses and roads running through vineyards.

Hiking routes for nature lovers

Sabinosa is the closest town to La Dehesa, an uninhabited area of communal grazing land. Here you can find the famous El Sabinar forest, with its characteristic junipers twisted by the wind, and the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, patron saint of El Hierro. There are several hiking trails in this interesting part of the island, passing through its enigmatic and solitary landscape . Near the village is also the Mencáfete Nature Reserve, whose trails lead through the Herreño scrubland and laurel forests, home to endangered endemic species.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
