Echedo

The epicentre of hiking

This beautiful village located in Valverde, to the north of El Hierro, looks out over the Atlantic from a hillside. The surrounding area is full of orchards and vines that come out from the volcanic ash and climb up to picturesque stone houses. The blackberries and wines are famous here. EL Hierro products hold Denomination of Origin Status. For those that like a bit of exercise, it’s a good place to start hiking trails. For example, there are routes to the natural pools that make up the Charco Manso cove. There are also circuits to the holy tree of Garoé, Pozo de las Calcosas and to viewpoints such as La Peña and Isora a Jinama.

All roads lead to Echedo

Echedo has an altitude of 360 metres. It can be reached by car via different regional roads. Close by there is a small town of 191 inhabitants with local service facilities. The La Higuera de la Abuela restaurant is near the central Plaza Miguel Barreda and has a very pleasant terrace to try fresh fish and shellfish dishes such as limpets, moray eels, and vieja. In the municipality it isn’t difficult to park, and once you’ve got out of your car you can go hiking in the local area.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
