Guayadeque Valley Natural Monument

Cave houses in an impressive Gran Canaria valley

Guayadeque is a haven for nature and traditional life in Gran Canaria. This fifteen kilometre valley in southeast Gran Canaria astounds visitors thanks to its wild landscapes, steeps slopes, winding path and shroud of unique plants. The sensation of being in a dreamland is reinforced by the valley’s famous cave homes, made from natural caverns in the lava rock. Many are now available as rural accommodation or home to restaurants.

Daytrip close to Maspalomas

This spectacular valley is a perfect day trip from resorts like Maspalomas as it is just 30 minutes drive away. First you come to a visitor centre that explains the customs of the original pre-hispanic inhabitants. The road then climbs up towards a chapel and several restaurants carved into the rock. Further up where the road ends there’s a seven kilometre track up to the Los Marteles volcanic caldera.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not walk in areas where it is not allowed and respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
  • Do not light fires outside the permitted areas and be especially careful during the summer months.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
