The cave history of the ancient people of Palma

In the grounds of the El Tendal Archaeological Park visitors can discover the history of the Benahoritas, ancient aborigines of La Palma who lived thousands of years ago. Its main attraction is the gigantic cave of El Tendal in the Barranco de San Juan. The space is 60 metres in size with 16 separate hollowed out spaces. Trousseaus, bones, seeds and other relics have been found in the grounds of the site, and you can look at these items in the local visitor centre. In the walking route through El Tendal there are another 26 caves, settlements, necropolises, and rock carvings for visitors to enjoy.

Facilities for everyone

The El Tendal Archaeological Park opens every day with a maximum price of eight euros. Entrance can only be paid by card and prices vary according to the specific discounts available on the website. Guided tours are available or you can go around by yourself. Explanatory videos put people into the mindset of the past, while the route to the bottom of the ravine is a good way to stretch your legs. If you like souvenirs, the museum shop is the place to find them. Parking is free, and there is access for people with reduced mobility.

- Do not take photos using the flash. They could damage items of artistic and cultural value.
- Use the waste- paper baskets and, insofar as possible, separate and place your recycling waste in the appropriate containers. Do not eat inside exhibition rooms.
- Try to be careful with your rucksack or bag and make sure you do not hit anything when you move.
- Try to be silent or speak quietly so that you do not bother other visitors.
