Risco Caído Archaeological Site

UNESCO protected caves

The Risco Caído Archaeological Site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes a series of ceremonial, residential, and agricultural-livestock caves. In one of the caves, sunbeams enter through an upper window, illuminating the western wall enigmatically and signalling sunrise from the Summer Solstice through the Autumn Solstice. In fact, UNESCO has included it among its Archaeoastronomy sites.

An ancient harvest calendar

The site and its visitor centre are in the Artenara municipality. It’s considered to be one of the most spectacular sites in Gran Canaria, in addition to being an exceptional archaeological monument on a global scale. Its structure displays the seasons and establishes a calendar for planting crops. There are models of the caves, information panels, videos, and sculptures in the visitor centre. A visit can be educational for the whole family.
