Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura

The history of the Mahos of Fuerteventura

The historic town of Betancuria was the old administrative capital of Fuerteventura. Since 1979 it has been recognized as an Historic Complex and an Asset of Cultural Interest. Set among picturesque streets, this museum is designed to let visitors discover the history of the island’s native inhabitants, the Mahos. Archaeological remains which date back to the 15th century have been found in La Pared, Cueva de Villaverde, Montaña de Tindaya, La Atalayita and La Fortaleza. The local heritage is compiled in different temporary exhibitions. Recent shows have, for example, surveyed the excavations carried out in the convent area of the local town.

The first museum on the island

This Island Archaeological museum was founded in the mid-20th century. In 2015, the annex building was closed for renovation to make the space more accessible and sustainable. Opening hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free, and special events and guided tours are sometimes organized.
