La Cilla Grain Museum

Discover Fuerteventura’s farming history

The Grain Museum in is located in the Casa de La Cilla, in La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura. This old stone building of great historic value was restored to house this museum. Visitors can learn about the island’s farming history and will be amazed by the importance that cereals had in the life of Fuerteventura. This interesting tour—which includes a photography exhibition that helps us to better understand the work done in the fields—shows how factors such as overgrazing helped form the island’s current austere landscape.

Enjoy seeing how grain was obtained

The Grain Museum is the perfect place to find out how grain was obtained in the past. A collection of objects, instruments, photographs and information relating to farming work relate part of the history of Fuerteventura, which was known as the ‘Canary Islands granary’ for many years, as the cereals required to feed the entire archipelago were grown here. Visitors can see a recreation of how it was obtained and see the farming tools and an explanation of the work done in the fields. The museum also organises educational and recreational activities.
