Take a walk through a village from the past

In the Guinea Ecomuseum in the north of El Hierro, by an old aborigine settlement, the houses of the first inhabitants are still preserved, as are those built by the colonists. The archaeological remains that have been discovered in the zone have been excavated so that visitors can now get to know more about the way of life of the island’s inhabitants in centuries gone by as they wander through the streets of the old village with its stone houses.

Discover El Hierro’s giant lizard

Just beside the ecomuseum you can visit the centre for the recuperation of El Hierro’s giant lizard, the best place to learn more about this endemic animal, in its natural habitat. The giant lizard is currently in danger of extinction and is one of the symbols of the island. Visiting the Guinea Ecomuseum and having this level of contact with the local nature is a delightful journey back in time, which you can do with the aid of a guide, mornings or afternoons, from Tuesday to Sunday.
