Iglesia de La Candelaria

A bell tower that looks like a lighthouse

At the top of the Joapira volcano, in La Frontera, there is a curious bell tower that rises 50 metres above the Church of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The bell was built inside a sacred hermitage. Its purpose was for chimes to be heard throughout the Golfo valley. At this location you can see contrasting colours. There are lime coloured walls and ochre edges and ceilings with the reddish mountains in the distance.

Climb some stairs, and enjoy great views

The bell tower has undergone a number of renovations prior to 1952 which is when the present structure was finalised. The design respects typical religious architecture in El Hierro thanks to the work of Federico Padrón and the assistance of local people. The old stone staircase which is still in use today has about 20 steps. Visitors should note that it’s advisable to carry water, sunscreen, and a hat during trips.
