Carnival: Los Buches

The Buches Festival in Arrecife, Lanzarote, is a traditional celebration that revives the ancient customs of the porteña culture. Organized by the Parranda Marinera del Buche association, the event features the construction of a replica of an old Canarian boat and the recreation of traditional carnivals. The buches, which were originally used during carnivals to hit passersby and in mock dances, are made from the skin of a shark that is inflated like a balloon. Today, participants wear white trousers and shirts decorated with red and black diamonds, adorned with leather straps and bells, and carry sticks with bags to scare the attendees.
