28 September 2024
As part of the festivities of El Rosario, on the last Saturday of September, Agüimes hosts the lively ‘Traída del Gofio y Agua,’ a celebration that revives an old post-war tradition. Originally, locals would leave the village to roast and grind corn, then return with sacks of gofio and collect water from wells and ditches. Today, the event maintains this tradition with a procession accompanied by a lively band of musicians that leads participants to the Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Upon arriving in the village, residents throw buckets of water from rooftops and balconies, creating a festive scene where water and gofio mix. The day concludes with a grand street party in the plaza, where everyone enjoys music and dancing.
