Scuba diving at Punta Restinga

Diving at the boundary of a marine reserve in the Canary Islands

The area of Punta Restinga is just opposite the fishing harbour of the town of La Restinga on the southern tip of the island of El Hierro. It is a world of underwater lava with a hugely diverse terrain: cliffs, shelves, sandy platforms and caves. In the water's depths, divers can encounter large groupers, spot impressive stingrays soaring over the sands and follow graceful trumpet fish in search of their small prey.

The anchor point is two minutes by boat from the port. After an11-metre descent, there are several great quality routes, including El Arco, El Veril and Los Cañones (the Shelf, Arch and Canyons). By day divers can see spiny puffer fish as well as many small fish typical of the area such as whitebait, damselfish, lee fish and bream and possibly a manta ray. At night stingrays and lobsters can be seen. In one of La Restinga's many restaurants visitors can taste local specialities like parrot fish, groupers and moray eels, served with traditional wrinkly potatoes and delicious Canarian mojo sauce.
