Porís de Candelaria

The most genuine place in La Palma

Porís de Candelaria is one of the most magical and personal corners of La Palma. Hidden in the municipality of Tijarafe, it is a small fishing village that rises inside a natural cave about 50 meters high. Its characteristic white houses were built by the locals, who were searching for a respite from the oppressive summer heat. Today it is still inhabited by families who make it their second home, seeking to connect with the sea and getting away from the stress of everyday life. There is no internet, no restaurants and not even trash cans. This secluded spot can be reached on foot – about 10 kilometers round trip – by boat or by car (there is a parking lot just minutes away).

Sunsets with a La Palma silhouette

Watching a sunset from the interior Porís de Candelaria is one of the greatest spectacles that can be contemplated. In addition, if we stand next to the niche of the Virgen deCandelaria – who grants her name to the place – the opening of the dome draws the silhouette of the map of La Palma in the blue sky. The coincidence could not be more magical and admiring the sunset from that point is a unique experience.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
  • Try to use ocean-friendly sun creams.
  • Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
