Urban beach with an authentic feel

Gran Tarajal is the main town in the municipality of Tuineje, in the south-central area of ​​Fuerteventura. The area is known for having the best, Blue-Flag-approved urban beach in Fuerteventura. The kilometre-long stretch of dark sand has a magnificent maritime avenue with a marina. It is a perfect place for a walk or a sit-down meal in one of the restaurants offering local cuisine. Gran Tarajal is not a touristy area, and the local people are recognised for their authenticity and collective spirit. This is reflected in the interesting cultural events held close and the large iconic murals that decorate the town.

Fascinating local events

Before visiting Gran Tarajal it is a good idea to discover if there are any interesting events taking place, because the area is known for hosting some of the most captivating gatherings in Fuerteventura. Stand-out occasions include: the TRAN TRAN International Clown Festival and the International Deep Sea Fishing Championships in September; Live re-enactments of the battles of Tamasite and El Cuchillete, (declared a gathering of National Tourist Interest) in October; and the Arena Negra music festival in November.

  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
  • Try to use ocean-friendly sun creams.
  • Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
