A surprising landscape in the southeast of El Hierro

The Natural Monument of Las Playas sits in front one of the most surprising landscapes of El Hierro. The enormous rocky coastline has been created by a series of massive landslides. The terrain is nine kilometres long and more than a thousand metres high. It’s an eye-catching view that’s soothing. Far from cities and towns, this part of El Hierro is a great place for a quiet holiday.

Views of Roque de Bonanza and Parador Nacional de Turismo

Seen from Las Playas and Isora, the views of this large semi-circular valley are impressive. Roque de Bonanza is a famous volcanic outcrop with evocative shapes that is a symbol of the island. Close to the sea in this area you can discover one of Spain’s best luxury hotels, the Parador Nacional de El Hierro. This valley of tranquillity is just 10 minutes by car from the main port of the island, La Estaca.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
- Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
- Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
- Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
