The beach with red volcanic sand

El Verodal Beach, on the northwestern coast of El Hierro, is in a marvellous setting in the municipality of La Frontera. Of singular beauty, especially due to its peculiar reddish volcanic sand, it is definitely worth a visit, although swimming here is not recommendable because of the strong currents. Nonetheless, El Verodal is a busy beach with truly spectacular scenery in volcanic surroundings, overlooked by impressive cliffs. The big lava flows are proof of the devastating force of the volcano during the last eruptions in this area of the island.

Although swimming is not recommended here and no typical tourist services are available, it is definitely worth visiting El Verodal to enjoy this peculiar beach that is so different to all the others on the island. Located in almost virgin surroundings, it is perfect for anyone who likes to get back to nature and gaze at magnificent views. As the rest of the island, this area is also characterised by its rugged coastline, creating a wonderful setting for a perfect day.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
- Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
- Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
- Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
