Surfing in El Quemao

Catching waves across from La Santa in one of the best spots worldwide

El Quemao, one of the best surfing spots in the world, is on the northwest coast of the island of Lanzarote. Across from the fishing village of La Santa, powerful waves and perfect tubes break on the days there is groundswell. The village of La Santa has a good choice of accommodation and restaurants as well as surfing schools and shops that hire and sell sports equipment.

A spot for experts to do surfing in Lanzarote

The wave in El Quemao is a succession of deep fast tubes, perfect for expert surfers. Its descent is vertical and it gives way to a deep take off to ride the tube. Although it is famous for its left wave, El Quemao also breaks to the right forming a fast hollow wave. The best conditions in El Quemao are between the months of October and March, at full tide and with E-SE winds and a swell from the north. Entry and exit to and from the water is at the pier in the village of La Santa.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
