Surfing at El Hierro

The most famous surfing spot in Fuerteventura

The most famous surf spot on Fuerteventura is El Hierro in the north of the island, next to Majanicho beach. Its fame is due to the regularity and quality of its breaks and it has become one of the busiest spots for surfers on the island. To get there you can take the dirt tracks that connect the area to the centre of Corralejo and El Cotillo or from the tarmac road from Majanicho to the village of Lajares. If you need to park, you can leave the car close by.

A fast tubing wave near Majanicho beach

El Hierro has two main peaks that break over a volcanic reef several metres below. The left is a fast, hollow, powerful wave that is ideal for manoeuvres, whereas the right is shorter but also forms quality barrels. This spot really shows what makes it so popular between September and May, with conditions around high tide, E-S-SE-SW winds and N-NE-NW-W swell. Entry into the water is not difficult, but the use of boots is recommended.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
