Trekking with views of the peaks of El Hierro
Our Lady’s way (Camino de la Virgen) goes all along the summits of central El Hierro and allows trekkers to contemplate wonderful views of the pastures, the slopes of El Julan, El Golfo, El Pinar, Nisdafe and the region of Azofa, quite near Valverde. On the flat, it goes through the different types of forests of El Hierro (juniper, pine and laurel) before entering the pasture lands of Nisdafe. It will take a day to complete the trek, so it can be done in stages.
Twenty seven kilometres and steep inclines join two churches
Twenty seven kilometres and steep inclines make this eight hour hike a highly difficult one. Camino de la Virgen combines a forest track, road and cobbled pathway through the towns of Frontera, El Pinar and Valverde. This hike which connects the Sanctuary of the plains with the parish of Valverde allows visitors to visit the Monument to the Peasant (Monumento del Campesino), work of the Canarian artist Tony Gallardo erected in 1976 as a symbol of the start of democracy. Suitable clothing and footwear should be worn and sun cream and food taken.
