San Gabriel’s Castle

A walk along the famous Puente (bridge) de las Bolas

Looking towards the Atlantic from the bay of Arrecife, in the northeast of Lanzarote, standing tall as it has been for centuries is the Castle of San Gabriel. Built to defend the island from pirate attacks, it is today an obligatory visit in the capital of Lanzarote. It can be accessed by two bridges, the oldest, the Puente de las Bolas, together with the castle forms one of the picture postcards of Arrecife. This is an area not to be missed when visiting the town.

The history museum of Arrecife, capital of Lanzarote

Built on an islet and surrounded by small beaches of golden sand, the castle’s present appearance dates from the XVIII century. It is home to the History Museum of Arrecife, where you can admire pieces from the ancient culture of Los Majos, the aborigines of Lanzarote as well as reproductions of important documents and models of the evolution of the capital. The castle and the bridge are historic places and listed as Buildings of Cultural Interest.
