Silbo Gomero Monument

The iron person whistling to the horizon

Located in the Mirador de Igualero, in the municipality of Vallehermoso, the Monument to the La Gomera Whistle is an important stop-off point for tourists on a tour of La Gomera. The sculpture is a tribute to the history of the island and its unique whistling language. "The tree that whistles" (El árbol que silba) was made by José Darias and uses an iron figure looking towards the horizon to illustrate the hand position of whistlers.

The whistle that can cross ravines and valleys

The La Gomera whistle has been prized through history for its ability to cross ravines and valleys. Declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the language is still used by many inhabitants of La Gomera today.
