A botanical ensemble containing the best examples of thermophilic forest
The Jardín Atlántico de La Gomera is a botanical ensemble covering an extension of 16,219 m² of terrain located in the municipality of Vallehermoso on the island of La Gomera. This island infrastructure is located next to the road leading to Vallehermoso beach in the neighbourhood of San Pedro, in a rural terrace farmland setting surrounded by one of the best examples of thermophilic forest in the entire Canarian Archipelago; inside it one can see some of the characteristic species of this plant community, such as junipers, Canary Island date palms, wild olives, dragon trees or morning-glory trees.
Plant specimens from the five continents
The garden contains plants from the five continents, in particular exotic fruit trees and plants with remarkable traditional uses, as well as a singular example of the island’s traditional agriculture where we find species with diverse ethnobotanical uses, ranging from vegetables to aromatic or medicinal plants. We should highlight the presence of Canary Island date palms from which the guarapo, or palm juice used to create the syrup traditionally called miel de palma (“palm honey”) is extracted in situ. We will also find plants representative of the original vegetation of the island of La Gomera, differentiating a thermophilic forest zone, the botanical and scenic framework of the location itself, and another exhibition area of evergreen forest, the most famous example of which, the Garajonay National Park, is just a few kilometres away. It has curious little hidden corners, like a corridor of citrus trees of the world, a pond with water lilies and an area with tables where one can rest and enjoy a relaxing moment after the walk.
