One of the architectural jewels of Gran Canaria
This spot—the man church of the city of Arucas in Palma—is popularly known as the Cathedral of Arucas. Although the building is grand enough to be so, it isn’t, in fact, a cathedral. Large stone towers, pointed arches and an exceptional facade of neo-Gothic architecture house various chapels such as the Nuestra Señora del Carmen chapel. There are also altars illuminated by stained glass windows. Both worshipers and visitors come to admire a chapel that was built on the foundations of the old city hermitage.
From a small hermitage to a neo-gothic parish
In 1909 the hermitage was demolished. It took 70 years after this date for the current church to be completed. The interior is open to the public. To make the most of the day, you can eat at one of the restaurants in the town of Arucas or visit the Arehucas distilleries which carry a selection of Canarian rums. From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria it takes 36 minutes on bus line 205 or 15 minutes by car on the GC-3 to get on site. Free of charge parking is available next to the church.
