El Julan

Discovering the ancient inhabitants of El Hierro

El Julan, a place of great natural beauty and ethnographic importance, is in the southwestern part of El Hierro, next to the Mar de las Calmas. The hillside has been made by a volcano and contains the best hiking trails on the island. The presence of human remains in the local area points to the presence of the Bimbaches, the aboriginal people of El Hierro. There are also petroglyphs of incalculable historical value that indicate the important cultural accomplishments of the ancient people.
