Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva de La Biosfera

Sustainability: from Isora to El Hierro

If you go to the old casino in the town of Irona, it’s easier to understand why El Hierro was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2000. The point of truistic interest is discovered via a staircase that rises to a second-floor. In this space there are four areas to discover informative panels that offer facts about the Biosphere Reserve declaration, the island ecosystem, the volcanic origins of the local area, the underwater eruptions that have been experienced, and the customs of local people who go about their work in the area nearby. There is also information on sustainable energy and organic farming.

An exciting-to-see interactive exhibition

There are plenty of social events going on in the casino building. There are also interesting discussions about the significance of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve declaration. A visit to the casino is included in the El Hierro Passport. For others, prices range are one euro for residents of El Hierro, two euros for Canarian residents and three euros for non-residents. Children up to 11 years old can enter free. Please note that in the ‘Bar El Pueblo’ you can have lunch or dinner.
