Islands committed to sustainability

The Canary Islands are an authentic natural treasure. Here, nature is the star of the show: incomparable landscapes, extraordinary ecosystems and species not found anywhere else in the world. More than 40% of the territory is protected, containing internationally recognised spaces, like the seven Biosphere Reserves, two Natural World Heritage sites and four National Parks. But it isn’t only about nature - the islands are also home to a wealth of valuable cultural and heritage treasures, as demonstrated by a further three World Cultural Heritage sites.

The archipelago is a global biodiversity "hotspot", a sanctuary of life. This island territory offers a huge variety of ecosystems, such as ancient forests, impressive volcanoes and lava fields or an incredible seabeds, as well as skies of exceptional quality. A destination of incalculable natural value.

We create tourism that takes care of those who live here and those who visit us. A more sustainable model that contributes to the wellbeing of the local population, at the same time as it preserves the archipelago’s natural resources, as well as the culture and heritage of local communities.

The Canary Islands’ commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change is firm. A path we set out on when, as a tourist destination, we joined the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and along which we resolutely continue to progress towards increasingly responsible tourism.

In the Canary Islands, committed individuals and organisations work every day to continue making progress and achieve more responsible tourism. With their actions and initiatives, Canarian people show their authentic commitment to the future of their islands.

Beyond conservation, in the Canary Islands we are committed to tourism that actively participates in the recovery and improvement of heritage that has been impacted by tourist activity. The regeneration of these treasures will contribute to the preservation of natural and cultural values that future generations also have the right to enjoy.
