The Paraninfo of the University of La Laguna presents "Comedy of the Welcome," a play set in the late 16th century, at the moment when Bishop Fernando de Rueda arrives in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to take up his position. The queen of the forest nymphs decides that Doramas, the Canarian hero who resisted the conquest by the crown of Castile, will give him a welcome. However, Doramas's selection provokes differing reactions in the towns of the Canary Islands: Gáldar defends Canarian traditions, while Guía advocates for the modernity brought by the Castilians. This conflict will culminate in a verbal duel between Doramas and the bishop, from which one will emerge victorious. Throughout the play, the history of the Canary Islands is interwoven, from their "rediscovery" and conquest in the 15th century to the arrival of Bishop Rueda, offering a reflection on Canarian identity and traditions.
