Romería de San Roque

August is a month of festivities in Firgas. Since the neighbors asked for protection from San Roque to free them from a terrible plague of diseases, every year the saint is honored and venerated as patron of the municipality. The curious Traída del Palo stands out, a tradition in which neighbors carry a wooden pole through the streets to the square of San Roque. Once there, they place a flag at the top end and raise the pole. The challenge is to climb the stick and kiss the flag, which only the bravest, or the fittest, dare to do. On the 15th, the carts and pilgrims occupy the streets with offerings for the patron and at 00:00 h begins the big party with fireworks.
