El Hierro Carnival. The Tigaday ’Carneros’ In the town of Tigaday on the Spanish island of El Hierro, a fascinating tradition endures that has been honoured as a UNESCO Asset of Cultural Interest on the Canary Islands. During this festival, young men from the village wrap themselves in the dried and dusty sheepskins, obtained over months or even years. With these garments, they playfully chase anyone who dares to challenge them. They run after children and adults, staining them with black dye and jovially frightening them in a game full of energy and deep-rooted tradition.
