Famara beach

A beach of golden sand in a natural park in Lanzarote

In the northwest of the island of Lanzarote, the beach known as Famara beach with its pale golden sand stretches out for over five kilometres. It is located within the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago, between the fishing village of La Caleta de Famara and the base of the impressive cliffs of Famara. It can be seen in all its glory at low tide, when the water forms a thin film on the sand which reflects the sky and the cliffs like a gigantic mirror. And if low tide coincides with sunset, visitors can immortalize a picture postcard scene which is one of the most emblematic of the Canary Islands with the island of La Graciosa silhouetted on the horizon.

A sports beach next to La Caleta de Famara

Famara beach is an untamed sport’s beach ideal for doing water sports like surfing, body boarding, windsurfing and kite surfing, thanks to the swell of the waves and constant winds. You can even do air sports like parasailing and hang gliding by taking off from the top of the cliffs of Famara. But at low tide, the ocean drifts out and forms enormous pools of shallow calm water all along the beach which makes it an ideal place to relax in the sun and enjoy the marvels this beach has to offer like long walks next to the sea. And after a day at the beach, there is nothing better than to enjoy a fish dish on the terrace at one of the restaurants in the fishing village of La Caleta de Famara.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
  • Try to use ocean-friendly sun creams.
  • Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
