Diving in El Bajón

The best dive in El Hierro

A submerged mountain with steep walls where currents feed a varied and abundant marine life. Located off of the southern tip of the island of El Hierro, by the fishing town of La Restinga, this mountain with its twin peaks at six and nine metres deep respectively is one of the best dive sites in the Marine Reserve of La Restinga-Mar de las Calmas. It is also a popular destination for the underwater photographers of El Hierro's famous Open Fotosub competition.

Diving with sting rays in La Restinga

On days when the currents are gentle, out of the many dives that La Restinga offers, divers should definitely choose El Bajón. Its walls, which plummet to depths of 100 metres in places, are inhabited by timid morays and large elegant groupers. It's common to find groups of burr fish and majestic examples of megrim circling this underwater cathedral. There's a multitude of things to observe under the water - like the famous crater – but divers should remember to keep an eye out for the occasional visit from manta rays or whale sharks in the surrounding waters.
