A spot with extreme wind and waves in Tenerife
In the south of Tenerife, in the town of El Médano, there is a spot that is popular with the most experienced windsurfers due to the extreme wind and waves on offer at its beach: El Cabezo. Frequented by experienced windsurfers, the spot can be dangerous, especially on days when the waves and currents are powerful. The location forms part of the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) world tour for the discipline of wave sailing and is at its best when the trade winds blow N-NE.
Windsurfing on a beach of sand and volcanic reef
The left hand wave at El Cabezo is more consistent and has a better wall than the right hand wave. The bottom is sand and volcanic reef, and protruding rocks just off and to the right from launch area of the beach mean that it is worth avoiding at low tide. Nearby there are many services aimed at sports enthusiasts in the town of El Médano, which has a relaxed, holiday and surfer vibe.
