A great spot to learn to windsurf in Fuerteventura
Playa de Sotavento, in the south-east of Fuerteventura, is one of the best windsurfing spots in the Canary Islands thanks to its varied conditions which are suitable for all levels. Located close to Costa Calma it’s a very safe area and is ideal for learning. Another area, closer to the main break, has strong winds and the conditions are better suited for more advanced windsurfers. Sotavento beach is known for the world championship Windsurfing & Kiteboarding competitions that are held here every summer.
A surf vibe by the windsurfing centre of Costa Calma
The most constant winds are during the summer when the north-easterly trade winds blow and can exceed 50 knots. The bottom is sandy and usually the waves are left handers that break near the shore. The atmosphere in the extensive Sotavento beach is very sporty thanks to the René Egli windsurfing centre and the beach bars, where many athletes re-energise after sailing.
