Llanos de Garañón Stargazing Viewpoint

Camping to observe the stars in the Gran Canaria mountains

Located in Tejeda, 44 kilómetros southeast of Gran Canaria’s capital city Las Palmas the Llanos de Garañon is an excellent spot for stargazing. At 1700 metres above sea level is is easy to reach by road and although capacity is limited there are several campgrounds with cabins close by. Due to the altitude and the wind, warm clothes are recommended.

Looking for the Northern Hemisphere brightest stars

Looking southeast, especially during the first nights of spring, you see the Winter Hexagon formed by the brightest stars in the Northern Hemisphere. These seven stars are already heading down towards the western horizon at this time of year. Clockwise, starting with the highest stars, you see Castor and Pollux, Capella, Aldebaran, Rigel, Sirius and Procyon, of the Gemini, Auriga, Taurus, Orion, Canis Major and Canis Minor constellations.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
- If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
- Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
