Janubio Salt Mines

The largest salt mines in the Canary Islands

The Janubio salt mines, in Lanzarote, are the largest in the Canary Islands and constitute a human landscape of great value, both architecturally and culturally. Nowadays, the “white gold”, which was so essential to the economy of the island until the recent past, is still produced. It is situated in a lagoon formed from the volcanic eruptions which produced a barrier of lava opposite the sea. It has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Irresistible sunsets in Lanzarote

This place tells of the great efforts made by the people of Lanzarote to work the mines in order to reap the benefits. That is just what salt mines are, an example of perseverance and love of the land, where the profession was handed down from fathers to sons over generations. It is a good idea to visit the mines at evening time, when the sun reflects in the pools as the water evaporates and produces such a variety of different shades, all of great beauty, one that a photographer cannot but immortalize.
