The islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife contain the largest number of coliving spaces in the archipelago of the Canary Islands, with over half of those that currently exist on the islands. Coliving is an accommodation and work space modality that has become consolidated in the Canary Islands over recent years, as a result of the increase in remote workers the archipelago has seen. It is a kind of extension of the coworking spaces already in existence.
Coliving spaces are shared residences where remote workers not only find a space that is adapted for teleworking, but also a place where they can cohabit with other remote working professionals and connect with the destination. A basic option for exchanging professional and life experiences and a way of enriching their stay on the islands.
At present, one can find over 40 coliving spaces in the archipelago, distributed among 5 of the 8 islands. The vast majority of them are located in the two islands with the largest populations, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Coliving spaces on Tenerife
The island of Tenerife has undergone progressive growth in recent years in terms of the community of remote workers who decide to spend some time here. Aware of the needs of this new type of traveller, the island has increased its network of coworking space and coliving spaces, where those who live in them can both work remotely and lodge.
Not only is Tenerife famous for its breathtaking natural beauty and enviable climate - it has also become an epicentre of innovation and collaboration. This Canarian paradise affords inspiring surroundings, but also offers exceptional opportunities for generating professional synergies which spring up from the relationships generated in the different coliving and collaborative work spaces. The island has numerous shared accommodation modules at present distributed among three main regions: the north, the south and the metropolitan area. We highlight a few of them below:
Nine Coliving
Nine Coliving is a coworking and coliving space located in the La Orotava area (in the north of Tenerife). The main services it offers include high-speed Internet, single or shared rooms for up to four people and recreational activities (such as yoga lessons or barbecues) in order to foster a sense of community.
Amarilla Coliving
Amarilla Coliving is the only coliving space on Tenerife with locations in both the south and the north of the island. As well as a coliving space in Costa San Miguel and in Los Realejos, they also offer guests the possibility of choosing accommodation or villas for private groups or retreats. By the same token, in both the south and the north, they have different coworking spaces with additional discounts for residents.
Ahora Living
Ahora Living defines itself as a Conscious Coliving and Growth Hub. Its founder created this space with the mission of building a community that would promote a conscious, sustainable lifestyle. It offers healthy living habits, experiences and personalised retreats which foster personal growth, as well as connection with others and with nature itself.
In this coliving experience the boundaries between working and living are blended, helping one find a balance between productivity and presence. It has a programme that hosts up to 15 people for 2-4 weeks, to engage in different activities aimed at cultivating body, mind and spirit whilst working remotely.
Cactus Coliving
Cactus Coliving is located in Valle San Lorenzo. The property this space is situated in is one of the oldest constructions in the south of Tenerife, and it has a rich history as a former gofio mill, which not only provided the local community with this cereal, but also supplied them with electricity. As well as offering numerous types of rooms to meet all needs, Cactus Coliving has several work spaces and two conference rooms.
It also has an extensive programme of activities through which it stimulates the creation of a community. The remote workers who stay at Cactus have the option of taking part in different experiences, such as wine tastings (they have their own winery), yoga and surfing lessons, among others.
Coliving spaces on Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is currently a preeminent destination for remote workers. One of the most important locations in Europe, according to the prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet, which proposes Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as one of the most complete urban destinations hosting remote workers.
Its cosmopolitan atmosphere and broad-reaching digital infrastructure, combined with the extensive range of shopping and leisure options on offer, have consolidated it as a favourite destination with remote professionals from all over the world. In addition, every year since 2016 Gran Canaria has been the venue for Nomad City Gran Canaria, the most important event held on the islands focussing on remote workers and digital nomadism.
But besides the climate, the extensive connectivity or the events related to the sector, remote workers choose Gran Canaria for the wide availability of coworking and coliving spaces the island offers.
The Mansion
The Mansion is a coliving space located in the city centre with seven independent en suite rooms. The multiple services it offers its residents include weekly cleaning, unlimited coffee or free access to its coworking space, located ten minutes away from the accommodation.
Cooliving
Cooliving is a shared space where guests can choose between independent rooms or apartments they share with other residents. Located in the city centre, this coliving space also has a spacious terrace where remote workers can socialize or work outdoors.
Coliving 1907
Set in the very heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it is located on a building that has been listed as Historical Heritage of the Canary Islands and which dates back to the year 1907. It has fully-equipped single and double rooms, a kitchen and spaces specially designed to foster community building among guests.
El Cabo Coliving
El Cabo Coliving is located in Agaete, a picturesque fishing village which also serves as a starting point for some of the island’s most impressive hiking routes. It has 31 rooms with private bathroom and a personal work space for those moments that call for greater concentration. The communal areas, moreover, are equipped with everything needed to offer a complete remote working experience.
It also has a spectacular terrace where remote workers can relax while contemplating the splendid sunsets, join the community to have a barbecue or even take their laptop out to work in a quiet setting.
Coliving spaces are so much more than mere accommodation for remote workers. They are a place in which to share professional and life experiences that enrich their stay on the islands, and they enable them to make closer contact with the places they travel to, offering them new opportunities. That home from home that accompanies them when they are away, making them feel like “a regular Canarian”.
