Tesine Festivity

The Tesine Festivity is a traditional celebration in the neighborhood of Tesine, in Valverde, El Hierro, and forms part of the journey of the Virgen de los Reyes during the Bajada, a quadrennial event in honor of the island’s patron saint. After departing from the Church of La Concepción, the Virgin is accompanied by the coastal patron saints—San Telmo, San Juan, and San Lorenzo—as well as the patron of La Villa, San Isidro. The procession climbs steep slopes toward Tesine, with significant stops at the stone bridge and the Casa del Conde. Upon reaching Santa Catalina, where a mosaic of the Virgin decorates the site, children perform the traditional “raya” with San Juan as their patron, in the place where his hermitage once stood.
