Cycling route in El Hierro

Tour El Hierro by bike starting from Valverde

Touring The Meridian Island by bike is a pedal power adventure which begins in its capital, Valverde, located in the northeast. Once you are in the farming village of San Andrés, take the HI-4 road to the junction which leads to La Hoya del Morcillo and the intact landscape of El Julan, one of the places which makes El Hierro so special. It is a slope covered with pine trees where only the hermitage of the Virgen de los Reyes (Blessed Virgin of King of Kings) and the lighthouse at Orchilla remind us the place is inhabited.

Climb through Frontera to the viewpoint at La Peña

Having admired the junipers twisted by the wind, the climb towards the extreme northwest of the island commences. After leaving behind the beach of El Verodal with its reddish sand, cross the valley of El Golfo and climb the road towards Frontera, one of the most difficult mountain passes on the island. Once the 1,300 metres in altitude have been overcome, there is just a ride to the viewpoint at La Peña, work of the artist, César Manrique, before returning to Valverde through the delightful villages of Guarazoca, Erese and El Mocanal.
