Feel like an extraterrestrial. The volcanic scenery on the island of Lanzarote is like something out of another world. A place that is more alive than we think.
LOS VOLCANES NATURAL PARK
Los Volcanes Natural Park is at the edge of two protected areas: Timanfaya National Park and the protected landscape of La Geria. An incredible area sculpted by volcanic eruptions. The contrast between the silence and the sound of my boots on the trails as I walk is really indescribable. The two volcanoes I visited in the park were El Cuervo and La Colorada. The terrain combines the best representation of solidified lava and lapilli combined with a proliferation of different lichens. A place of greens and earthy colours that transports you to Mars itself.
It's incredible to trek around this peculiar place. The protected landscape of La Geria is curious because of its circular pits dug out of the volcanic ground, in the centre of which a vine is planted. The wine produced here—with its own designation of origin—is internationally acknowledged for its unusual flavour.
MAKE A NOTE OF THIS TIP/RECOMMENDATIONS
- Always walk in the permitted areas.
- If you are a wine enthusiast, you can visit the area's different wineries.
